My kids play outside a lot. And I think that’s really great, I’d rather they be outside than playing video games all day. At the same time however, I used to have a problem trying to keep their laundry all caught up. When kids come inside dirty from playing outside every single day, that’s a lot of clothes!

So I finally realized that I was going to have to have them wear some outdoor clothes more than once, to save both me and my washing machine some stress. I decided to do a little remodeling in the back of the house, to make it more outdoor oriented. I started by expanding the linoleum a bit, so they had more room to move around, and then installed some mudroom lockers for them to hang their clothing in. Mudroom lockers are wider and deeper than your typical locker, and so because of that they can hold all the jackets, sweaters, and sweatpants that I need them to.

That took care of their clothes, but I still had hats, gloves, and scarves to worry about. My kids had a tendency to just throw them into the bottom of the locker, so I wanted to work around that. I found some wire freezer baskets that I wasn’t using anymore, and they happened to be about the same size as the lockers. I just set them in the bottom, and now my kids can throw their things into them all they want.

The big victory here is that they change their clothes without me having to stand over them and make sure they’re doing it, which is a huge time commitment that I no longer have. They also wear the same things several times, which cuts back on my laundry load. This has made my life much easier, and I encourage you to copy what I’ve done to make things easier for you as well.
