Do your children have a tendency to make a mess inside the back door when coming in from playing outside? It can be difficult to keep that area of the house clean, but if you have a mudroom, it can be much easier. A mudroom is a small room or area just inside a back or side door that is specifically designed to be easy to clean – think tile floors, wooden benches, and a hamper for any dirty clothes. It’s a fantastic solution to the cleaning problem.

The term mudroom isn’t used in the United States all that much – it’s more commonly used in homes that keep animals, to help the handlers keep from spreading dirt throughout the house – but the concept of having a kind of ‘barrier’ room between outside and inside is a very workable one. The children come in, they take off their things, and if in the process they leave mud around, a quick mop will clean up the floor.

Many mudrooms come equipped with mudroom lockers, in theory it’s to keep the outdoor clothing separate from everything else – good for keeping the horse hair out of the house. But it works equally well for your child’s outdoor coat or pants – just hang them up, and give them an industrial strength washing every so often.

These mudrooms are typically part of the home design, and not just an attachment to the back of the house – but if you don’t have much space, then an addition could certainly work as well. It all depends what will work best for you – and how much space it takes your children to clean up after themselves.

Mudrooms are an uncommon name for a common solution to the problem of tracking dirt and mud into the house. For a home with a lot of children, or especially active children, it may be the answer that you’re looking for.

Philip has written on mudrooms before, even discussing mudroom locker plans for homes. Other topics he’s touched on include choosing a locker organizer to keep your children’s belongings together.
